Inks

See the words. See the moment.

Inks is a private journaling app for iOS that presents your entries in the form of personal letters. Built for iPhone and iPad, it gives you a quiet space to record daily thoughts, memorable events, or notes written to someone who matters to you.

Write your thoughts as a letter

In Inks, every record is formatted as a letter. Completed entries are saved on your device first; when you want to share them, you can manually export them as images, PDFs, videos, or Live Photos. Inks is not a social network: it does not ask for recipient email addresses or automatically send entries out. You can open the app and start writing right away, and your draft is saved automatically as you edit.

Read the final text first, replay when you choose

Whenever you open a completed letter, you see the final text right away. If you want to revisit how a message came together, you can tap “Replay” to watch the typing, revisions, and pauses play back much like a Live Photo. Once a letter is finalized, its core text remains fixed, though you can add follow-up notes later.

Customized paper and layout styles

You can customize each letter with a choice of stationery, fonts, photos, hand-drawn doodles, or stickers. For special occasions, you can also add envelopes and stamps. When adding photos, Inks uses the iOS system photo picker, accessing only the specific images you select.

Local storage and MBX exports

Your letter text is stored on your device by default and is not automatically uploaded to cloud servers. Features such as account login, purchase verification, and resource updates require network access. With your consent, we collect information about how certain features are used to identify problems and improve the app. Analytics data does not include anything you write, including letter text, postscripts, or follow-up notes. You can also turn on App Lock, which uses Face ID or Touch ID for local verification on your device. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Finished letters can be exported as native MBX archive files. An MBX file packages your text, writing timeline, and the specific stationery and fonts used at the time into a single document. You can keep MBX files in your personal cloud storage or on a computer, and re-import them into Inks to view them later.

Getting started

You can write your very first letter without signing in to try the full writing and preview experience; account login is required for ongoing creation afterward.

Core writing, saving, and reading features are free to use. Optional Inks Pass subscriptions or a Lifetime purchase are available inside the app if you wish to unlock additional stationery sets and advanced styling tools.

Requires iOS 17.0 or later.
