Our Philosophy
Inks is a private writing app that presents your records as letters. These are the choices behind it, and how we approach personal writing, privacy, and long-term care for your files.
A letter first
Inks is not a social network or a traditional email app.
You can use it to record your day, a thought, or a feeling. Start with a few lines, or take your time writing a longer letter. There is no need to choose a recipient or enter an email address. You can write for yourself without planning to share. Your writing is saved on your device first; exporting or sharing it is a choice you make later.
We want to make it easier to start, so writing fits naturally into your day.
Read the finished letter first, replay when you choose
Inks preserves the process of typing, editing, pausing, and drawing.
When you reopen a letter, you see the complete final text first. If you want to revisit how it came together, tap “Replay” to watch the writing process, much like a Live Photo.
Keeping the process means that later, you can see not only what you wrote, but how you gradually arrived at it. A pause might be a moment of thought; an edit might simply be a different word. We do not interpret what you were feeling. The stationery, fonts, photos, and handwriting also preserve the way your record looked at the time.
Once a letter is completed, its body text can no longer be edited directly.
Privacy in practice
Your letter content is stored on your device by default and is not automatically uploaded.
Features such as accounts, purchases, resource downloads, and public profile updates involve necessary network connections. Usage analytics require your consent and do not include letter text. When you add photos, the system photo picker accesses only the images you select, without scanning your entire library.
Keeping your own records
Inks uses a self-contained file format called MBX. Each file keeps the letter text, writing process, photos, doodles, and resources used together. If a stationery design is later removed from our library, the content saved in your file is unaffected. You can keep MBX files in your own cloud storage or on a drive and import them into Inks to view later.
Maintaining a service has real costs. User purchases support our work, rather than advertising or the sale of user data.
What you take the time to write deserves to be kept. We will continue to support MBX files that Inks has already created, keeping each letter and the resources used with it together so you can return to it later.
We also have a specific commitment to keeping your files readable over time. Keep writing, and remember to keep your own backup of important letters. You can read the details under “Long-term availability” in the user manual.
